CASE STUDY—ORGANIZING KEYS

Shelley and Dan arrive back from work to the messy house they turned upside down when looking for the keys that morning. After a short conversation they agree that the keys need a home.

Dan and Shelley both make suggestions. Shelley wants to keep them in a pot by the door and Dan wants to keep them in a kitchen drawer. They decide to go with Dan’s idea as he is very security conscious, hence him not being keen on keeping keys by the door. They also agree that Shelley will pick the drawer and execute the RESET.

The final engagement needed is when the RESET is completed. You must walk the space together and discuss the changes that have been made. This way everyone can understand the system(s) that have been put in place and can start to use them. When we do the handover to the owner of the space, we can also see this as a release. Sometimes if we put a lot of time and effort into something, we feel like we own it and don’t like to see it messed up. By handing over the space, you not only increase the chance of the new system(s) being used and maintained, but you release your own thoughts of owning it back to the actual owner.

This all sounds very formal but it’s really not. A two-minute conversation, a simple observation, or some time to reflect can be all it takes to really start a solid plan to make the space work its hardest for everyone.

S—SET UP

So, you’ve recognized the space that needs a RESET and why. You’ve engaged everyone who uses the space so they know what your end goal is. Now we need to think about what is needed to set it up. There’s nothing worse than starting a RESET and not being able to complete it because you must stop and go out to buy something necessary.
